The Origin
CHALLENGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY started as a course in HONOR of Buckminster Fuller at the United States International University (1993) which merged with Alliant University and both became Alliant International University, The course was thought by: Dr. Anwar Dil, Dr. Joel Levine, and Dr. Tamer Tamer Salameh. The course title and description follows.
HB 802/PSY 803 Topics in Leadership “Challenges of the 21st Century”
The course description in the University Catalogue underlines the importance of studying "a variety of topic areas in leadership and human behavior". This course has been developed as The First Annual Leadership Lecture/Seminar Series aimed at highlighting some important topics relevant to the overall theme of "Challenge of the 21st Century." This course has been developed by an interdisciplinary team of three faculty members (Dr. Anwar Dil, Dr. Joel Levine, and Dr. Tamer Salameh) of USIU in consultation with several their colleagues at USIU as well as some professors at institutions of higher education in the larger San Diego area. Several opinion leaders in the community were also involved in finalizing the content of the course. The course was taught by the presenters listed in this document. The course was thought by the following presenters. Above is a picture of all presenters followed by a biography as of 1993. All presenters are available on video. The videos are in process of being edited to construct a timeline of from 1970 until now. |

The Changing Status of Women Presented by Dr. Afia Dil
Dr. Afia Dil is Professor of Linguistics and Human Behavior at Untied States International University where she also teaches a graduate course in women of the world. Born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, she was educated at the University of Dhaka (B.A. Honors and M.A.), University of New Zealand (Post-graduate Diploma in Education). University of Michigan (A.M.), and Stanford University (Ph.D.), She has served as Professor of English at the Eden Girls College, Dhaka, and as Professor of Language Specialist at the west Pakistan Education Extension center, LaHore. She has published a few books in English and Bengal Notably Two Traditions of the Bengal Language (Cambridge, 1991). The Bengal version of Helen Keller’s My Teacher, and Je Desh mone pare (The Country my heart remembers) her book of travels as the first woman leader from East Pakistan in the United States under the Leadership Program of the U.S. Government. |

Dr. Al Zolynas is Professor of English at United States International University where he teaches courses in writing and literature. He received his B.A. from the University of Illinois, M.A. and Ph. D from University of Utah. He is a former Resident Poet in the Poet-in-the-schools program sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts and Fulbright-Hays Scholar. The Changing Concept of Wisdom Presented by Dr. Anwar Dil
Dr. Anwar Dil is Professor of Language Science and Communication at United States International University where he teaches courses in language and communication, values and human excellence, and inter-cultural leadership. He received his B.A. at University of the Punjab, Lahore; M.A. at University of Peshawar; A.M. at University of Michigan; Ph. D. at Indiana University. Has served as consultant in Language Science to UNESCO, UNDP, Ford Foundations; General Editor and Volume Editor of 19 Books in the “Language Science and National Development Series,” published by Stanford University Press. Recipient of the Iqbal Gold Medal awarded by the President of Pakistan (1972) for outstanding work on the poet philosopher Muhammed Iqbal. Author of the Concept of Successful Life; An outline of Urdu Sentence Structure; Calligraphy and Arabesque; co-author of studies in Pakistani Linguistics, Shahiddullah Presentation Volume, Humans in Universe (with Buckminster Fuller). His abstract paintings and calligraphs are in many universities and in the collections of connoisseurs around the world. |
Restructuring Education in the 21st Century Presented by Dr. Bill Hampton
Dr. Bill R. Hampton is Associate Professor of Education and Director of Educational Administration Program at United States International University where he teaches courses in supervision and evaluation of Instruction and administrative leadership. He received his B.A. at University of Missouri; M.A. Ed. D. at St. Louis University; John Hay Fellowship in Humanities, Harvard University. Former High School Principal; Current President of the San Diego Board of Education and a passionate advocate of the Public School System. Consultant to schools across the United States and several other countries (e.g. Japan, England, Micronesia) on school management, counseling systems and the changing role of the teacher. United Nations and the Changing World Order Presented by Dr. Carroll Cannon
Dr. Carroll Cannon received his Master’s and Doctor’s degrees in Administration in Higher Education at New York University. Active in professional education for more than 30 years he has been a teacher, professor, and administrator. During this time, he participated for three years in the development of Japan’s first Junior College, and served 21 years as Provost, Academic Vice- President and Dean of Students at California Western University at San Diego and Pepperdine University. Active in the United Nations Associations he has traveled throughout Western and Eastern Europe, the former USSR, Japan, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. He is the author of Shaping our Future Together: The US, the UN and we the People. |
World Community Service of Rotary International Presented by Dr. Edgar C. Hatcher
Dr. Edgar C. Hatcher of Bristol, Tennessee, has had a distinguished record of world community service through Rotary International. He Served as Governor of Rotary International District 7570 comprising Virginia and Tennessee. He has led several Rotary Group Study Exchange teams to the former Soviet Union, People’s Republic of China, Bangladesh, and other countries. Currently he is General Coordinator of the World Community Task Force of Rotary International. |

Dr. Frederick Dow is University Professor of International Management at United States International University where he teaches courses in business policy and international management. He was educated at Boston College, University of Massachusetts, and Yale University. Formerly he was Hayes-Healy Professor of Marketing at the University of Notre Dame. He has also had a distinguished career as Managing Director of Dow Chemical France and as Manager of Dow Chemical in Latin America and Pacific Areas. Former Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Gary W. Lawson is professor of Psychology at United States International University where he teaches courses in chemical dependency, family therapy, and psychopharmacology. He received his B.A. at Central State University; M.A. at Ball State University; Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University. Licensed Clinical Psychologist in California and Nebraska. Registered Psychologist in Illinois. The Rise and Fall of U.S.S.R. Presented by Dr. Grigori Iaremenko
Dr. Grigori Iaremenko was born in Odessa and spent 46 years in the Ukraine, the former Soviet Union, before migrating to U.S.A. He got his master’s and Ph. D. degrees at Kiev Institute of Foreign Languages. As a post-graduate student, he did research at the University of Kiev; in 1989 he studied as a probationer at the University of Surrey, Great Britain. Worked at the Department of Foreign Languages at the Mining Institute of Krivoy Rog, first as teacher, then as a senior teacher, a professor, and as Head of the Department. He is the author of ten books and several scientific articles. Besides his specialty as a linguist and as an expert in methods of teaching foreign languages, he has conducted research and published articles in history and literature. In 1992 his book of poetry was published in the Ukraine. He is a post-doctoral fellow in intercultural communication and leadership at United States International University. |

Turbulent Multi-Ideological & Multi-Disciplinary Complexity Presented by Dr. H. Igor Ansoff
(Father of Strategic Management) Dr. H. Igor Ansoff is Distinguished Professor of Strategic Management at United States International University. He has also had a distinguished career in Industry as a manager at the Rand Corporation and Lockheed Corporation. Later he served as a professor at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University, as dean of the Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, and as a professor at the European Institute of Advanced Studies in Brussels. Ansoff has been a leading pioneer in the development of Long-Range Planning and Strategic Issue Management. Among his most notable books are Corporate Strategy (1965), Business Strategy (1969), From Strategic Planning to Strategic Management (1984), Several of his books have been translated into several languages. |

Dr. Herbert York has had a distinguished career as a researcher with the Manhattan Project, as the first director of Defense Research and Engineering in the Eisenhower administration, as ambassador and chief negotiator at the Comprehensive Test Ban talks during the Carter administration, as Chancellor of the University of California at San Diego. He is the author of Race to Oblivion (1970). The Advisers (1975), and Making Weapons, Talking Peace: A Physicist’s Odyssey from Hiroshima to Genève (1987), and several other publications. |

Dr. Joel Levine is Professor of Education and Director of Teacher Education Program at United States International University where he teaches courses in teacher education and supervises student teachers. Dr. Valentine Berezhkov Dr. Valentine Berezhkov was born in St. Petersburg in 1916 Graduated from University in 1938. Served in the Soviet Navy (Pacific Fleet) 1938-1939; First Secretary of the Soviet Embassy in Germany from December 1940 to June 1941. Returning to Moscow he was appointed Assistant to Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov on Soviet-American Relations and served as personal interpreter to Stalin and Molotov. Participated in wartime conferences of three leaders of the anti-Hitler coalition – Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill. After the war he tuned to journalism as Editor of the Soviet monthly journal USA Economics, Politics, and Ideology Also was chief editor until 1989. From 1978 to 1983 he served in the Soviet Embassy in Washington as First Secretary. Dr. Berezhkov has been teaching at Moscow University and Moscow State Institute in International Relations and has lectured in many countries. He is a Visiting Professor at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Author of Seven books with a circulation of over two million copies, including Diplomatic Mission to Hitler (1965); The Anti-Hitler Coalition (1972); History in the Making (1893); Lessons of Diplomatic History (1986). He was born at Stamford, Connecticut, and educated at Texas Christian University at Fort Worth, Texas, from where he obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He earned his Ed. D. degree from Harvard University. He served as the Founding-Dean of the School of Leadership and Human Behavior at California Western University and United States International University from 1967 to 1984.
